Bossi takes upon himself the transformation of the salon aria into the lirica [art song], in the sense of an independent genre performed in concert halls, which already begun with Sgambati and Martucci in the second half of the preceding century. […] The Canti develop within a limited vocal range, between c#′ and g′′ (the latter reached in only three pieces and always in relation to an expressive climax) as though to suggest their suitability for several vocal registers, in the hope of a correspondingly wider diffusion. This is an element of particular significance in treating the lirica as a genre in its own right, as opposed to operatic singing which Bossi keeps at a distance.
