The harmonic vocabulary of Silvio Mix appears very varied and in general quite far from the concept of tonality in the classic/historical sense. The Composer himself comments on this in the pages of the newspaper “L’Impero”:
It is not a matter here of so-called atonality (which does not exist either in Italy or anywhere else – if this word is to be understood in the sense of lack of tonality – since even an ensemble of musicalized sounds tends to move in a given direction), but of polytonality, that is, superimposed tonalities (counterpointed harmonies).
It will be noted that all the pieces included in this selection constitute “small forms”, in other words, they are all of short duration; we do not know if this is the result of a particular aesthetic-stylistic orientation rather than a kind of mistrust (or fear) of “large forms”. However, the results cannot but vindicate the Composer.
